Raid on Bungeling Bay is the first game designed by Will Wright.

The game has the player controlling a helicopter which is on a mission to destroy everything that moves. The only ally is the carrier, which is where the player begins at each level and may return to for repair and pick up bombs, as long as the player manages to protect it from being destroyed. The main goal in each level is to destroy a factory, which requires a steady increasing amount of bombs. Enemy forces include ships, planes, tanks, anti-air guns, and eventually, a large battleship.

Trivia

Raid on Bungeling Bay was named #24 overall among the “150 Best Games of All Time” by Computer Gaming World Magazine (15th Anniversary Issue--November 1996).

Raid on Bungeling Bay, like its Brøderbund predecessors Choplifter and Lode Runner, features the militaristic denizens of the Bungeling Empire as the primary antagonists and hence, though not part of the same series, they can all be considered to occur in the same "game world".

On February 28, 1987, Raid on Bungeling Bay was put on the infamous German index by the BPjS.

Raid on Bungeling Bay was marketed by Broderbund as part of its "Action Series."

Developing Raid on Bungeling Bay inspired Will Wright to create SimCity. He was having more fun building the levels than destroying them in the game, and decided to make a game based on building cities because of it.

Realistic helicraft controls.
360 Degree scrolling screen.
Victory parade plus a newspaper account of your raid.
On a small planet in a remote corner of the universe, the evil Bungeling Empire has created the most fearsome enemy you will ever face: The War Machine. Directed by an Artificial Intelligence bent on total conquest, it is a complex of factories scattered throughout six heavily defended islands. Day and night, these factories churn out an endless armada of remote-controlled weapons of doom. Their ultimate aim is clear: the final destruction of Civilization As We Know It!
Before all of Humankind is crushed beneath the Empire's iron heel, one faint hope remains. A single, highly mobile raider might, just might, be able to penetrate the Bungeling defenses. Only a fighter pilot of enormous skill and strategic savvy could dare attempt such a mission. We turn to you in our hour of desperate need.

At dawn, you move. From an off-shore carrier base, you will command a very fast, but very vulnerable, helicraft. You must launch a surgical strike at the very heart of The War Machine. You will be attacked by every weapon known to man, and some not yet dreamed of. Somehow you must carpet-bomb the Bungeling factories into obliteration before they complete their Ultimate Weapon.

We wish you all the luck in the galaxy. You'll need it!
Surveillance Report:
Flash! We have just received a fragmentary map of the island system, smuggled to us by the last resistance fighters. It contains the location of the Bungeling factories, and a coded clue to where to find a secret weapons cache. Examine the map carefully- you may need it to survive!
